120 km southeast of Fortaleza, along route CE-040 you will find this
little fishing community, with calm beaches from November to June and strong
seas and winds from July to October. Here traditional fishers capture a
variety of fishes and lobsters, such as spiny rock lobster - red lobster
(panulirus argus), green lobster (panulirus laevicauda) along with king
mackerel, spanish mackerel, snappers, halfbeak, tunny, stingray, sailfish,
tarpon, snook and jewfish with traditional fishing methods .
First settlers began to live here around 1850 looking to survive from
fishing with the first dwellings located to the west of the present settlement.
The first documented event goes back to 1928 with the historical
"Raid" of the Jangada 7th. of September, an adventurous 15 day voyage
on a fragile sailraft to the port of Belem at the mouth of the mighty
Amazon River.
In 1974 the families fled from torrential rainfalls which led the garden
lagoon to break from its bed and carry the fragile huts to the ocean, thus
originating the move to the present location.
In 1979 a sleazy speculator entered the scene and put an end to the
peaceful way of life, giving way to the fight for land which goes
on until today.
As a direct consequence the Association of Village Residents
was founded in 1989 with the help of the Centre of Defense and Promotion
of Human Rights which Cardinal Aloisio Lohscheider had created to assist
poor communities in their land conflicts.
In 1993 the famous protest trip of the sailraft S.O.S. Sobrevivência
from Prainha do Canto Verde to Rio de Janeiro captured the imagination
of the national and international press. During 76 days four fishermen
and two young ladies faced the seas and the roads of coastal Brazil.
As a results the Fishermens Forum against Predatory Fishing came to
life in Prainha do Canto Verde in 1995.
